Introduction

With effect from 1 July 2023, Marsh Sport are the appointed insurance broker to The National League.

This web page will set out:

  • Details of the insurance provided by the National League.
  • How to report an incident.
  • Answers to frequently asked questions.
  • Details of any additional insurance, and risk advisory services, you might wish to consider.

What insurance do you get as a member club of the Vanarama National League?

As part of your membership to The Vanarama National League, your club automatically receives a bespoke insurance programme aligned to your level of football, this cover applies to the club as a whole and extends to subsidiary companies and community trusts.

Your affiliation to The National League automatically includes insurance protection for liability and personal accident.

The annual policies run from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2025.

Who is covered for liability insurance?

This cover applies to registered clubs of the Vanarama National League and their subsidiary companies including Charitable Trusts.

The policy covers:

  • The Football Conference Limited Trading as The Vanarama National League & Subsidiary Companies.
  • The Football Conference Limited Member Clubs Community Trusts.
  • The 72 Member Clubs of The Football Conference Limited and Clubs Subsidiary Companies.


Who is covered for personal accident insurance?

  • Registered contracted first team players of the 72 member clubs.
  • Match Officials
  • Coaching Staff and Trainers
  • Club managers
  • Club and league committee board members
  • Club and league employees.

Indemnity limits are as follows:

  • Public Liability - £10,000,000
  • Player to Player Indemnity - £250,000 (top up to £500,000 available)
  • Abuse - £10,000,000
  • Employers Liability – £25,000,000
  • Liable and Slander - £250,000
  • Advertisers Liability Extension - £250,000

Insurance cover explained

This insurance can pay out a set amount if someone is injured in an accident, and the pay-out can be a lump sum or a weekly amount.

It ensures all participants have protection in the event of an injury, and because this is a “non negligence” cover, it can help reduce litigation in the game, because unlike a liability policy you do not have to find someone to be at fault for an injury to receive compensation. 

Public liability insurance provides protection against legal liability for bodily injury to third parties and damage to third party property. 

Products liability insurance provides protection against legal liability to pay compensation including legal costs for death or bodily injury, or damage to third party property arising from products supplied.

Employers Liability provides protection against legal liability in respect of claims made for injuries to any volunteer or employee of the member club.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cover extends to first team squad players during home and away fixtures, training, spectating, and travelling to and from away fixtures, if organised by the club. 

It is essential that you undertake risk assessments for the activities of your club to support you in your risk management. You and your club owe a duty of care to those around you.

If an allegation for negligence is made against you or your club the risk assessments will be needed to evidence what you have reasonably been able to do to prevent an incident occurring.

Yes, the public liability insurance provided full player to player cover for incidents between players whilst training and competing for up to £250,000. Each club has the opportunity to increase this limit of indemnity to £500,000 directly with Marsh Sport.

Employers’ liability protects the employer in the event of an injury to an employee, for which the employer is liable.

Employers’ liability could apply to clubs who employ coaches or volunteers to work on their behalf.

Public liability protects a club/member/volunteer if another member, or a member of the public, sues them for injury or damage caused.

We recommend that a designated person within your club is made responsible to record any reportable accident/incident. Records must be kept for at least 6 years, and longer where it involves a person under the age of 18 years. Names and addresses of any possible witnesses should also be recorded. Please ensure your club has an accident book to record all such information.

In respect of safeguarding allegations, records should be kept indefinitely.

Yes, clubs are provided with employers liability insurance, with a limit of indemnity of £25,000,000.

If the club is incorporated the directors may still find themselves personally liable and therefore directors and officers insurance is essential. This can be accommodated directly via Marsh Sport please contact us.

Yes, the liability extends to cover the charitable trust and all club subsidiaries. 

Policy documents will be issued directly by Marsh Sport, and a To Whom it May Concern letter can be found in the downloads section.

If there are verbal or written allegations made against your club, you should record the information and notify Marsh Sport of the incident at your earliest opportunity. Please contact 0345 872 5060 (9am to 5pm Monday to Friday) or email us.

In no circumstances should you admit liability or agree to pay for any damage caused as this may prejudice the position of insurers and could result in the withdrawal of any indemnity.

Please note this is a liability policy where Insurers decide if negligence attaches to you, meaning any payment you make to any third parties will not necessarily be reimbursed.

Report an incident

Please follow these simple steps to making a claim:

 

All incidents that could give rise to a claim must be reported at your earliest opportunity to Marsh Sport on 0345 872 5060 (9am to 5pm Monday to Friday) or email us.

Any writ or summons must be forwarded on immediately following receipt.

You should not admit liability under any circumstances as the insurers will respond to all allegations on your behalf.

It is important that all incidents that may give rise to a claim, however minor, are reported to Marsh  Sport as soon as possible after the event.
